Left Align To learn about the ELD mandate, you will have to know what the ELD device is first. It is an electronic logging device used to automatically collect, supplement and process a driver’s Record of Duty Status (RODS) and Hours of Service (HOS) data by collecting the drivers' inputs with information collected from the engine’s ECM. It is mandatory for this data to be collected as the per the final rule outlining by Transport Canada on June 13th, 2019.

Some facts about the Candian ELD rule:

The Canadian ELD rules works in compliance with the ELD regulations adopted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to standardize processes prevent errors, logbook tempering and driver harassment.

It has adopted most of the provisions of the US ELD technical standards and complies with the end of the AOBRD Grandfather Clause of 12/16/19.

Existing paper logs and other electrical devices will be changed with a regulation-compliant ELD device that connects directly to the engine ECM ELD devices in Canada will have to be certified by a 3rd party, unlike its US counterparts which can be self-certified. This means that will be fewer devices which will be available to carriers who operate in Canada.
