INTRODUCTION:

Semi-trucks may soon have their speeds regulated by the United States Department of Transportation, if DOT's new compliance regulation proposals become an official rule.

In late August, DOT released this new proposal, which, if it passes, would require all new semi-trucks, buses, school buses, and any other large commercial vehicle to remain in compliance by being outfitted with a speed limiting device. According to the DOT, these devices would track the speed of vehicles. The devices would ensure that the driver of the vehicle stays at the limit the speed limiting device is set at, or slower.

According to the proposal, the DOT has not decided yet what speed they'd like the speed limiting devices to be set at. Currently, the DOT is studying the possibility of setting the devices at 60, 65, and 68 mph. The speed would be applicable across the United States, even if the posted speed limit for trucks is higher on any highways.

The DOT believes these new proposed regulations will help improve safety for large commercial vehicle drivers and all other vehicles on the road. Previously, a Highway Safety Study conducted showed that drivers driving too quickly, and increased speed limits on highways in general, is a large contributor to increased traffic deaths. They also propose that the regulations will reduce fuel use, which will save the country over $1 billion a year. It could also help with reducing the environmental impact of trucks.

The DOT's rule proposals are currently open for review; the DOT extended the deadline for formal comments until December 7. To submit your formal opinion on the proposals, go to DOT's website.
