The trucking industry is calling for stronger driving training standards, while one Tory MPP has put forth a private members bill calling for the elimination of the written air brakes test at the time of license renewal.
MPP, Amorjot Sanhu who represents Brampton West, claims that eliminating the air brakes written test on license renewal will help to reduce red tape in the industry. According to Sanhu, other provinces that do not have a written air brake test for drivers renewing their license, do not see any negative impact on driver safety. The following provinces do not require a re-test: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI.
Reaction to the private member’s bill however has been mixed. While some welcomed the idea, many in the trucking industry criticized it as one that would compromise road safety at a time when driving standards were already falling. The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada put out a statement that it was opposed to Sanhu’s bill and instead favours enhancement of the air brakes test as this part of the vehicle continues to be one of the worst areas for defect during inspections.
