Tips for Renewal of the International Registration Plan

Posted by Trux Solutions

Left Align IRP or the International Registration Plan promotes the trucking industry in Canada for the fullest usages of highways by authorizing the proportional registration of HGV fleets and their recognition in all jurisdictions to aid in social and economic development.

As an interstate carrier driver, you only need to submit an application to the jurisdiction base you drive in. Once the application has been checked you would be given an IRP cab card which will list all the jurisdictions that you have paid the registration for.

Now, if you have to renew the IRP permit for your fleet, here are some tips that can help you with the overall process,

Some important tips that you should read before you apply for that renewal

  • Keep all your IRS validated Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return documents and IRS Form 2290 at hand, you need to show them when you are applying for the renewal. You should also have a photocopy of a cancelled cheque.
  • You have to declare your vehicle weight and if it weighs more than 55000 pounds you must provide a Schedule 1 Tax paid receipt
  • You should file the HVUT return with the IRS form in-between 1st of July to August 31st for any vehicle which is currently licensed.
  • The credentials for the registration year should be visible on your vehicle. The licence plates should be seen on the front of the power unit and the back of the trailer or semi-trailers
  • You must always have the original cab card
  • If you are adding or removing a vehicle from your fleet then you would have to file a supplemental application. Also if a removed vehicle does not have a replacement you have to submit a Schedule C application to Motor Carrier Services (MCS) within 30 days
  • Also, if want to decrease the weight of one of your vehicle, you can only do it during a renewal, so you may want to think about this aspect as well.

When it’s time for renewal, MCS will send you an email. The fees will be calculated based on your fleet’s ‘reporting period’ distance. This is calculated based on the distance covered between June and July. For more details, call Trux Solutions. We are based in Mississauga.
