Trux Solutions – Rear Camera Systems Being Considered for Commercial Vehicles

Newer models of passenger cars have been equipped with rear view camera visibility systems for some time now. Now, there is a move to equip commercial trucks and busses with similar technology. Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sought out feedback from stakeholders on the proposal in advance of a proposed rule that could see camera systems actually replace mirrors in cars, trucks and busses.

As technology changes, it is important that legislation changes with it in order to ensure that all vehicles on the road are able to operate as safely as possible. Past changes have included transitions from analog dashboards to digital dashboards as well as the safety standards for electric vehicles.

Current standards require that commercial trucks and busses have two exterior mirrors that allow the driver to see along the sides of the vehicle. According to researchers, the use of cameras would provide a better and brighter view than traditional mirrors for the driver and therefore increase safety.

Camera systems for commercial vehicles however are not without their concerns. For example, there was some concern that glare on bright days would irritate drivers. This problem however was found to cause only minor differences in visibility. Water droplets on the camera lens that obstructed camera view was another cause for potential concern. As of yet, it is likely that further research will need to be done to see if these issues can be resolved in a cost-effective manner.
