Among the goals for 2020 for the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is to continue to crack down on the Driver Inc. scheme – a non-compliant misclassification entity that is prevalent in the trucking industry’s underground economy.
The CTA is urging law-abiding trucking companies, owner operators and other stakeholders in the industry to lobby the federal government and law enforcement to crack down on the Driver Inc. scheme.
CTA’s campaign against Driver Inc. has three components. The first is a group company letter; the second is a petition for drivers to sign and the third is an email to local MPs that explains how Drivers Inc. harms both the trucking industry and the economy.
The CTA is asking trucking companies to sign the letter which will be submitted to the CRA and other enforcement agencies by January 29, 2020 and include their company nameplate. The letter urges these agencies to take stricter measures against the Driver Inc. scheme. To access a copy of the letter,click here.
Individual drivers are also encouraged to join the campaign by signing the CTA petition for Ottawa lawmakers to crack down on Driver Inc. Since there are many truck drivers out there who are deliberately seeking out Driver Inc. carriers in order to avoid paying their fair share of taxes, this leaves compliant, law-abiding drivers in the unfair position of having to carry more than their share of taxes.
Finally, the CTA is also asking all stakeholders to send emails to their local MPs to advise the of how serious the issue is and of the need for enforcing the law. CTA has already prepared emails for both Liberal and opposition MPs. To access those emails, click here.
The CTA is not asking policymakers to write new legislation. It is simply urging lawmakers to enforce laws that are already on the books and stop the $1 billion or more that is being diverted from the public coffers each year into the underground economy.
