As our world is evolving and adopting higher levels of technology, so too is the trucking industry. Fleet managers who wish to keep their business current, need to adopt new technology to continue to provide the best service and to keep up with their competition.

The following are a few examples of technology that fleet managers should be considering to keep their fleets up to date:

1. Self-driving semi trucks

The trucking industry has been looking into autonomous self-driving vehicles for some time as governments work to develop legislation concerning them. Since driver retention has long been a problem in the industry, it is likely that we will see more self-driving trucks in the future.

2. Driver facing cameras

The purpose of driver facing cameras is to improve driver performance and reduce liability. These cameras can detect when the driver is tired or distracted so that they can be alerted.

3. Dash cams

Similar to driver facing cameras, dash cams are used to monitor driver behaviour. Some of these devices can also monitor the driver’s speed and use of brakes so fleet managers know how safely the driver is operating and keep them in contact with the driver.

4. Advanced Collision Mitigation

Many new trucks today come standard with advanced collision mitigation (ACM) systems that help detect when an accident might be likely. Older trucks can also be retrofitted with this technology. Today’s ACM systems are better than the ones of the past which often had false positives. They can take autonomous action to avoid a collision when necessary.

5. Trucker apps

A variety of new apps are on the market to help drivers with their jobs and to help the trucking company run more efficiently. These apps perform a variety of functions including navigation, driver management, and even payment.

6. Electric 18-wheelers

Electric vehicles are becoming more common in all industries. Electric 18-wheelers will not only help companies save on fuel costs, but they will also help to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.

7. Dynamic routing

Dynamic routing software allows routes to be selected based on a number of real time factors including traffic density, road construction, and weather. This improves the efficiency of the fleet.

8. ELD

Electronic logging devices have been in use since 2017, tracking drivers’ hours of service. This allows for more accurate logging and a higher level of safety and compliance.

9. Trailer tracking

These GPS systems monitor the whereabouts of your company’s assets.

10. Temperature tracking and record keeping

If you are transporting temperature sensitive items such as food, plants, medications, etc. it is important that you are able to monitor temperatures and keep accurate records to avoid loss and liability. Electronic temperature tracking and record keeping devices give you real time access to this information.
